The 82-minute documentary, Mario Lanza: The Best of Everything, has been written, produced and directed by Alan Byron of Screenbound Entertainment, a group specializing in bios of various musical personalities.

This new DVD is Region 2 and cannot be played outside Europe, of little use if one lives in New Zealand or Australia
Derek McGovern - 9 years ago
That's true; however, as a New Zealander I know that many people in my country own a multi-region DVD player. They're very common these days.

Computers can also play DVDs from any region if you download the free VLC Player. That's what I use in South Korea, where I currently live.

Many thanks for those links, Steff. The comments from famed rock guitarist Steve Hackett and tenor Joseph Calleja, in particular, are wonderful.

Cheers,

will a movie ever be made of Mario Lanza's life story. After all this time you would think that one would be made?
Derek McGovern - 9 years ago
Hi John: Since the early 1960s, there have been numerous reports of proposed film projects on Lanza's life, but none has ever eventuated.

If you copy and paste this link, you'll find an interesting discussion on our Lanza forum about a film biography:

I've just watched "The Best of Everything," and can heartily recommend it. Aside from some wonderfully astute musical observations from Joseph Calleja, Lesley Garrett and Anthony Wade (aka "Dr. Voice"), plus touching reminiscences from Ellisa Lanza and excellent biographical commentary from Derek Mannering, what I loved about it is that Mario often serves as the doco's co-narrator. He's telling his own story, and the doco makes great use of the Christopher Show and other interviews that he gave.

I've also never seen the Palladium performance in better quality, and the extra visual detail makes one appreciate all the more just how expressive Mario was when singing live.

Sure, there are things we can quibble about in the doco, such as the paucity of film clips or the brevity of the actual singing examples, but the positives (for me, anyway) greatly outweighed the negatives.

It's a balanced documentary, and ultimately a very moving one. Congratulations to all involved.
